Into The Free by Julie Cantrell
From the book club chat I was to receive When Mountains Move and was surprised to get this book also. This is the first book in the series so I read it first. Then I'll read and review When Mountains Move.
I wanted to read this book because of the summary of the book-travel to a place I've never been to.
Book starts out with Millie and she lives in MS with her mother and father. Jack rides in the rodeo and is usually not at home.
Marie does laundry and other chores for the people on the plantation. Although they live in servants cabins they have a deal with Mr. Sutton and pay a monthly rent.
Her life is described on a daily basis of the places she goes around the woods and fields to her neighbor Sloth who allows her to accompany him on his chores-collecting eggs for the master Sutton and other chores.
She hides when her mother is beaten and finally gets up the nerve to see her father at his rodeo show. Accidents happen and she was lucky to meet River, a gypsy who travel through town once a year. She learns from the old woman that she has to find out about her past before the future can be shown to her.
She finds the box and the old woman gives her the key-a Pandora's box of sorts. She confronts her mother as to the meaning of all the items in the box-her past. She learns so much about her other families and realizes why they don't accept her into their lives.
Circumstances leave her in the care of the Millers and she finds out secrets about them and her mother. When a tragic event occurs she makes up her mind and tracks down where her mother was taken to so she can get anything she left for her.
She confides in Mabel throughout the story and they have a treasured friendship. She has a choice to make: go with River the gypsy on his journey or go with Bump and Mr. Tucker who run the rodeo and shows as they have taken care of her and her family for everything she ever needed.
Not sure if her decision is the right one...
What I really liked was the very detailed descriptions of the land and learning new things about the horses and the ways of they gypsies.
I received this book from Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review.

Into the Free A Novel Julie Cantrell 9780781404242 Books Reviews

Let me start by saying....this is not my genre. I am not a Christian fiction fan. I find them overly dramatic and preachy. However, I met this author in the food truck line at Southern Festival of books in Nashville this year. I was very impressed. She informed me she would be at Square Books in Oxford, MS in January. I decided to give her a try before her appearance.

Millie is a young girl from an abusive home during the depression era in Mississippi. She struggles to find the right path. When her parents die within several days of each other, this sends her life spiraling out of control. She has to come to terms and be strong to overcome.

This is a tale about the true struggles in life and the strength needed to get through them. I absolutely loved Millie. She fights with strength she doesn't ever realize she has. All her trials and experiences help her grow and become the woman she wants to be.

I enjoyed this story for the many aspects it portrayed about strength and endurance needed to succeed in life. I loved the setting and especially the part about the gypsies.

This author is not afraid to show the hypocrisy in some Christians or the evil in people. This is one of the reasons I enjoyed this novel. Her characters were real and experienced real-life emotions with many different ups and downs.

Very impressive. I am looking forward to her new novel.
Words are not enough to express how much I truly enjoyed reading this book....not a lot of books can evoke from me strong emotions as did this book....at first I was pissed at how it ended, I wanted revenge -yes I said it, and it made me angry to think that once again the bag guy gets away...but after I calmed down I was able to see pass the revenge and see the bigger picture. It is always best to leave things in God's hand but I cannot wait for the sequel!!!!! Please write faster lolol love you Millie!!!
Into the Free is the story of Millie Reynolds, a girl growing up in Mississippi during the Depression. It follows her life for seven years, as she deals with an abusive, alcoholic father who regularly beats Millie's mother; a mother who is addicted to morphine and regularly enters what Millie calls a valley, her word for deep depression; and the death of her only friend, an old black man. All Millie can think about is getting away from the horrors of mental, emotional, and physical abuse, even if she has to run away with the gypsies that visit her small town every year.

This is one of the best books I've read this year. The characters are extremely well developed, and are very relatable. The storyline is well researched, and transported me to Depression era Mississippi. It is rich in details and that makes it seem like you are really there, watching the story unfold, instead of just reading a book. As the book explores the taboo subject of abuse, it is described in a way that is real, without being too graphic. Rather than hating Jack Reynolds, it makes you wonder why he is so violent with his wife. As Millie grows up and faces many hard circumstances, she doesn't realize she is developing a strong character that will help her face anything life throws at her without breaking.

I highly recommend this book. It is something you don't want to miss! It isn't suitable for children and young to mid teens due to the family violence and adult situations.
