I first picked this book up at a Scholastic Book Fair in Middle School. This is a great book of fairy tales... none of which end with a prince and a wedding. If you're into feminist propaganda (I love feminist propaganda) or just have a daughter that isn't into princes and happily ever afters, maybe a daughter that's exploring her sexuality... this is a great book. Probably won't make you a lesbian... but maybe... I mean, who knows? I hear GMOs make you a lesbian, so you can't really blame the book. /s

A 1997 New York Times Notable Book, KISS THE WITCH is beyond amazing! This is fairy tales retold with a feminist slant, and done so well. Some of the stories are familiar and some take thought to recognize and Donoghue connects them so well. Emma Donoghue is a brilliant writer. If you aren't reading her you should be whether you are male or female. Always good, always entertaining, and brilliant prose. SO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is a charming and imaginative retelling of fairy tales, much more insightful and woman-friendly than the originals. It's a pleasure to become aware of the linkages between the women as each chapter unfolds. This is a very clever book, brisk and astute, that can be appreciated on a number of levels, from simple storytelling to feminist analysis. It's a great gift item for any older girl (14+) or woman in your life. Highly recommended!
To call these re-tellings of some of the most beloved and best-known Western folktales "feminist" is to both belabor and miss the point. The stories are retold from the perspective of each one's heroine, with surprising twists and breath-taking endings. Each character rings true in her emotions and reactions, much more so than in traditional tales, and each grows and transforms as a result of the events she recounts. One tale leads to another in this chain of transformations. The prose is stark and luminous. This is a jewel of a book.
Emma Donoghue is an accomplished novelist, but this is a reworking of traditional fairy tales. What a delightful read this book is. it is quite a slight volume and each tale transitions into the next. I think her idea was to revamp Traditional tales with a feminist and very individualistic twist and she succeeds spectacularly. It find this authors writing lyrical and original. I consumed this volume in a couple of sittings. Recommended to anyone who enjoys quality storytelling.
This was a very quick and enjoyable read for me. I read "Room" and was instantaneously drawn to this writer. I enjoy her style and creativity. This book left most things to the imagination and I think it was its biggest charm. My ten year old was also fascinated when I was telling her (without the adult elements) the way the author connected and retold famous fairy tales. Wonderful book and very thought provoking.
This was much more clever and different than I expected it to be!
The traditional tales are woven together in narrative voices first-person.
Not for small kids, but late teens and on? Definitely.
Maybe even adolescents, depending on your household. Read yourself, first.
Inspiring.
Dark, but overall a feel-good piece.
Donoghue's twist on Fairytales. Minimalist and very focused on style. Each narration is different, but they bare a similarity in that they tend to be more obtuse than obvious in their telling of their stories. Sometimes the originals were easier to identify than others and sometimes the varied to the point of almost unrecognizable - but that wasn't a big deal. I enjoyed the different takes on the classic fairytales but more so I enjoyed the story for what it said about the women, the relationships, the idealism of some fairytales or the morality of the originals being altered or altogether missing. If you are expecting clearly recognizable variations or long deep views into the story behind the story, you'll be disappointed. But, if like me, you love the sound of language and the piecing together what is said and what isn't and finding meaning in such short, compact stories, then read. She's one of my favorite authors for a reason.
